ProGrade Digital has developed its new CFexpress™ Type A 4.0 Iridium class memory cards with next-generation performance leveraging PCIe Gen 4 interconnect with NVMe host controller interface for use in future Mirrorless, DSLR and high-definition video cameras. Available in a 480GB, and 960GB capacity and performance levels provide read speeds up to 1800MB/s – CFexpress Type A cards are ideal for quickly off-loading high volumes of video or RAW photos and sustained write speeds up to 800MB/s and 1450MB/s respectively – perfect for uninterrupted, cinematic capture of RAW 4K or 6K video. The CFexpress 4.0 Type A Iridium cards are VPG200 rated.
NOTE: Current CFexpress cameras will not be able to take advantage of the maximum speed of this card. Until CFexpress 4.0 cameras are introduced, the benefit of this card is doubling the speed of your workflow when downloading content with the ProGrade Digital PG09.6 USB 4.0 Reader.
CFexpress is a removable media standard created by the CompactFlash Association. There were three form factors defined in the standard: Type A, Type B, and Type C. All form factors leverage the PCIe® Gen 4 interface for higher performance based on a computing industry storage interface and utilize NVM Express™ 1.4c protocols.
The CFexpress Type A memory card is a lot smaller, measuring 20mm x 28mm x 2.8mm, while the CFexpress Type B measures 29.6mm x 38.5mm x 3.8mm. The CFexpress Type A uses 2-lane memory while the CFexpress Type B uses 4-lane memory.
We have our CFexpress Type A single-slot USB 4.0 reader (PG09.6) and CFexpress Type A and SD dual-slot reader USB 3.2 Gen. 2 (PG09). To achieve the full speeds of the CFexpress Type A 4.0 card, we recommend going with the PG09.6.
Currently the only cameras that take CFexpress Type A memory cards are the Sony A1, Sony a7S III, Sony a7R V, Sony FX6, Sony FX3, Sony FR7, and Sony FX30. While we attempt to keep this list as inclusive as possible, there may be additional Sony cameras that have been introduced since the writing of this FAQ.
Video Performance Guarantee 200 (VPG200) means that when you are recording, you can ensure that the minimum write speed while recording is at least 200MP/s without dropping any frames.
